Nia Dacosta Breaks Highest Gross Record for Theatrical Release by Black Female Director

Nia DaCosta, the director of “Candyman,” joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe family with “The Marvels,” the official sequel to the 2019 hit “Captain Marvel.” The movie features Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani in an intergalactic adventure. Despite the SAG-AFTRA strike leading to an unconventional press rollout, the film was released this month and has grossed $110 million, breaking a major Hollywood record as the highest-grossing theatrical release by a Black female director. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, DaCosta and the rest of the cast missed a screening of the movie held on Nov. 8 at Westwood’s Fox Village Theatre due to the strike. DaCosta had a birthday party the same night, and her representative stated that she only found out about the screening once she invited selected “Marvels” crew and cast members to her 34th birthday party. The representative also stated that DaCosta was not invited to the screening event at all. However, the representative denied any suggestion that DaCosta had anything other than adoration for her creative team. While the movie received mixed reviews, it is a solid mid-tier MCU movie, according to FirstShowing.net 3. The Hollywood Reporter praised the heartfelt sequel, calling it a “grounding contribution to a gluttonous and increasingly perplexing Marvel Cinematic Universe”. Deadline.com called it a “cosmic triumph grounded in sincerity and humanity”. Overall, “The Marvels” is a must-watch for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and superhero movies in general.
