Davis Moturi Shooting: Neighbor Arrested for Attempted Murder, Stalking, and Harassment

A shocking incident occurred on October 23 when Davis Moturi, a 34-year-old man, was allegedly shot by his 54-year-old neighbor, John Herbert Sawchak. Moturi is currently recovering in the hospital with a fractured spine, two broken ribs, and a concussion.

Background:
The alleged shooting occurred while Moturi was pruning a tree near the property line between his home and Sawchak’s residence. Witnesses reported hearing a loud “pop” noise, and Moturi was found collapsed on the ground. According to the criminal complaint, security footage from the Moturi’s home shows Sawchak, a white neighbor, as the shooter.

Harassment and Threats:
Moturi’s wife claimed that the harassment from Sawchak began over a year ago, with incidents including throwing household items, yelling racial slurs, and threatening Moturi’s life. Despite Moturi’s attempts to involve the police, no action was taken until the shooting incident.

Prior to the shooting, Moturi had three encounters with Sawchak that were documented in the criminal complaint:

1. On October 11, 2023, Moturi approached Sawchak to discuss the tree on their property line. Sawchak became irate, yelling at Moturi and using racially charged language.
2. On March 1, 2024, Sawchak approached Moturi while he was working outside his house on a ladder. Sawchak verbally harassed Moturi and threatened to put him in the hospital.
3. On April 5, 2024, Sawchak threw household items at Moturi from his second-floor window.

Charges and Arrest:
Sawchak was arrested and charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, stalking, and harassment. The criminal complaint also includes allegations of Sawchak making threats against Moturi, including using racially charged language and threatening to kill him if he called the police again.
