A RENEWAL OF PAN-AFRICANISM

Algeria and Morocco have both been making significant efforts in recent years to strengthen their ties with other African countries and to position themselves as leaders on the continent. This renewed focus on Pan-Africanism has led to greater cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, as well as to a more active engagement with other African countries.

One example of this cooperation was Algeria’s role in helping Mali during its recent conflict with France. When Mali was facing a military intervention by France in 2013, Algeria played a critical role in mediating a peace agreement between the Malian government and the Tuareg rebel groups. Algeria’s efforts helped to prevent the situation from escalating further and to establish a path towards a more peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Morocco, for its part, has also been pursuing a more active role in African affairs. In 2017, Morocco rejoined the African Union (AU) after a 33-year absence. The move was seen as a significant step towards African unity and solidarity, and a recognition of Morocco’s role in the continent. Since then, Morocco has been actively engaging with other African countries and participating in various initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development on the continent.

One notable example of Morocco’s Pan-Africanism is its involvement in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a blueprint for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years. Morocco has been actively contributing to the implementation of this agenda, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, trade and investment, and human resource development.

The new found Pan-Africanism of both Algeria and Morocco highlights the potential for greater cooperation and collaboration among African countries. While there are certainly challenges and obstacles to realizing this vision, the commitment of both countries to promoting peace, stability, and development on the continent is a positive sign for the future of Africa. By working together and leveraging their respective strengths and resources, Algeria and Morocco can play an important role in shaping the continent’s path forward.
